Curettes are held in the modified pengrip (between the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger). Since instruments for scaling and rootplaning are used with a certain amount of pressure a correct grasp, proper point of support and stable but flexible finger rest are very important.
The curette 13/14 is used for the removal of subgingival plaque, calculus and rootplaning of the distal surfaces in the (pre)molar areas.
The curettes are designed for use in specific areas, but it is possible to use them in other areas as well. When the instrument is inserted the last part of the shank of the curette is oblique to the tooth surface. During the pulling stroke the last part of the shank is parallel to the surface of the tooth.
Combinations of curettes are available. The Gracey curette combination 11/14 and 12/13 improves efficiency during treatment; the mesial and distal surfaces in specific (pre)molar areas can be cleaned with one instrument.
